ECONOMICAL ACTIVITIES


The production structure in the province of Los Andes, is based primarily on the Commerce category, and on second instead, the category Transport, storage and communications, because in this province is located the port land for the Los Libertadores pass. Third, real estate companies amounted to 513 total in the province. It highlights the mining activity generated by CODELCO-Andina, whose most important deposits are located in the area of Rio Blanco - Saladillo.

However, in the communes of Long Street, Rinconada and San Esteban, the items are more representative Trade Agriculture, forestry and transport, storage and communications.


AGRICULTURE: THE RISE OF THE FRUIT

The soils are very fertile on V Region. The Aconcagua Valley is cultivated even before the colonial period. By irrigated crops have been largely flat lands, emphasizing the fruit, with more than 26,000 hectares, intended for table grapes, peaches, nectarines, avocados and nuts.

The boom in the export of table grapes has been instrumental in the last decades of the twentieth century. Fruit production is concentrated mainly in the provinces of Los Andes and San Felipe de Aconcagua. Moreover, it also highlights particularly the cultivation of vegetables, among which mention may be tomatoes, green peas, beans, pomegranates, garlic, onions, artichokes, cauliflower, spinach, melons and watermelons. It is also important to the production of corn and potatoes.

CODELCO ANDINA DIVISION

The division operates the site Andean Rio Blanco, whose wealth was known since 1920. But attempts to start its operation did not materialize until half a century later, in 1970.

It is located fifty miles northeast of Santiago, between 3,700 and 4,200 meters above sea level. Currently this division makes the exploitation of minerals in the underground mine and the Rio Blanco mine Sur open pit.

Andina produces about 209,727 metric tons of copper concentrates which are key raw material for the refined metal. Also placed on the market 2163 tons of molybdenum per year.
